Catch The Breeze with Good Morning Finch - An Interview

Depois de dois belos eps, o quarteto italiano Good Morning Finch soltou seu disco cheio Gemini no início de Março agora, e o trabalho é uma sequência lógica dos eps. Harmônico e dissonante, sintetizando as duas maiores referências da banda, Slowdive e Sigur Ròs, Gemini é uma viagem melancólico a paisagens sonhadoras com letras em italiano o resultado dá uma sonoridade ainda mais exótica e interessante ao disco.

Gemini é ambicioso e alça o Good Morning Finch para uma das belas revelações deste 2015.

Q. When did Good Morning Finch started, tell us about the history...
John: it was in early high school when I had a dream in which I had a conversation with a friend, we were talking about creating a band called Good Morning Finch, I was at the early stage of my musical experience but I was really into the pop-punk scene of the city at the time so it took several years to realize that finally was the right moment to create "that band from the dream", it happened in 2008 during a festival. Then in 2010 the first line-up.

Q: Who are your influences?
John: 90's shoegaze and post-rock, 80's post-punk definitely and hardcore bands from late 80's. If you want some names I can briefly summarize with Slowdive, Joy Division, Sigur Ròs, even Hum and Cocteau Twins. Also lately pastoral-indie... yes it exists, I'm excited about that! Listen to our song "Copenhagen" to understand what I'm talking about!

Lillo: we have a strong duality with guitar sounds, I prefer wide sounds inspired by Cocteau Twins, some Brian Eno early works or Pink Floyd while Gregorio is more into acid sounds like Sonic Youth.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Lillo: is like to empty my mind and then fill the void with the power coming out of the instruments. Every time is just awesome.

John: is a pure transcendental experience

Q. How do you describe Good Morning Finch sounds?
John: Good Morning Finch sound is like when you desperately try to dig up something from the field with bare hands and your nails are full of topsoil, while upon your head planets are exploding. Imagine that everything is happening into a blue room with no doors or windows.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs
John: Gemini's recording process took quite a lot, we worked two years I guess. The album has been recorded three times, first one live in my basement, the second time Lillo made the demos track by track and then we recorded in the studio for real. Honestly the writing process was more relaxing and mind blowing, we were working the four of us in the same room mainly, but sometimes also in pairs because we don't live in the same city anymore. That was pretty cool because you can hear different personalities and spirit in different songs, then when the others were dropping by to the studio we shaped the whole thing together. Personally I'm proud about lyrics, they are hermetic and very intimate. "Amo quando cadi giù" is one of the most powerful lyrics I ever wrote.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended
Lillo: I really like the new album by King Krule, a strange guy from Manchester. Also I fell in love with the self-titled album by Jake Bugg. I think they both are twenty…they are incredible!

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
John: I really would love to cover Atmosphere by Joy Division or Souvenir by Giampiero Riggio (a lo-fi artist from our region)

Lillo: I like Atmosphere too. Another great song I would like to cover is Just like Honey by The Jesus and Mary Chain

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
John: We're working on 8 or 9 demos for our new album which is actually called "Van-pyro", we're kinda proud of that, it sounds insane.

Lillo: Then find a van in order to tour the universe.

Come On Die Young with Sunset Images - An Interview

O duo mexicano, Sunset Images formado por Samuel Osorio, guitarra e baixo, e Alejandro Zuñiga, bateria e tapes, sairam do México e foram aterrizar no Brooklyn para que seu post rock psicodélico tivesse a devida atenção.

Em 2014 soltaram o belo e envolvente álbum homônimo seguindo os ensinamentos dos mestres do gênero, os escoceses do Mogwai.

Criando imagens através das diversas atmosferas criadas, o Sunset Images difere um tanto dos demais praticantes do post rock deixando de lado aqueles crescendos de lado e focando nas nuances, bela banda.

Q. When did Sunset Images started, tell us about the history...
Sunset images is now a two piece band, formed in Mexico City and consists of Sam (Samuel Osorio) (guitar, bass) and Alex (Alejandro Zuñiga) (drums, sequences) we are currently based in Brooklyn.

We started in 2013, by then we where 4 members, and we recorded our first album 'Sunset Images' but shortly after the other guitar player left the band and then we became a trio, in 2014 we played a lot in Mexico City and had the chance to play in the USA for the first time, we played in New York at Baby's All Right (Brooklyn), The Bowery Electric (Manhattan), when we came back the bass player left but Mauricio Juarez quickly replaced him and joined the band. With Mau we toured most cities of Mexico like Puebla, Monterrey, Toluca, Guadalajara, and we did an awesome tour trough Texas, playing in Austin, Houston and San Antonio.

By January 2015 we decided to move to Brooklyn, Mau couldn't join us but we decided to keep the band and to start composing new material, now as a two piece band.

Q: Who are your influences?
We have some different tastes, for example Alex influences are Nirvana, Blonde Redhead, The Mars Volta, Sam likes Interpol, My Bloody Valentine, Arvo Pärt and both of us love Sonic Youth, Pink Floyd and Mogwai.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We are two relaxed and quiet persons but when we are on the stage and feel the power of our instruments... is a kind of a transformation. We always give all of ourselves. All the shows are very important for the band and we try to express this to the audience.

Q. How do you describe Sunset Images sounds?
For us, is our souls that are sounding. Our music is a very long travel inside the most shining and darkest feelings. But, if we have to describe our sound in a style, we love to say our music is like an experimental and rock band.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
We have always liked to record in live session, for us it feels more real this way, this past March we recorded what's going to be the new material as a two piece band, a new EP. We recorded in Testa Estudio (located in León, Guanajuato, Mexico) three songs we composed trough December to March and we recorded two tracks that were completely improvised.

We use loop pedals to record, sometimes the song starts with a guitar base Sam records it and the he adds the bass, or vice-versa, Alex while playing drums also adds sequences or sounds though a tablet, everything is played live, nothing is added to the mix.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Vorcha and Chipper Jones from Austin Texas, we played some shows with them, Metz and Suuns from Canada.

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
Sonic Youth's Pink Steam.

Q: What´s the plan for the future.... Now we are planing the release our new EP entitled 'Hajime' by the end of May 2015, we are also releasing a music video for the single, we are playing shows in Brooklyn and New York and we are looking to tour some cities in the USA and maybe go to Canada to promote the new material.

Sunny Sunday Smile with Velódromo - An Interview

Novíssima banda da cena chilena, descendentes de MBV, o Velódromo debute agora dia 15 de abril com seu EP homônimo e traz as referências de shoegazer clássico e fantasmas dos anos noventa.

Quatro canções que transitam entre shoegazer e as guitar bands americanas da época de ouro do rock alternativo.

Um belo trabalho, que credencia o Velódromo a umas das gratas surpresas de 2015.

Q. When did Velódromo started, tell us about the history...
Velódromo started last year, around the month of August. Sebastián, Alejandro and Gustavo had a band before, and Bárbara joined to play the bass around that time, to form a new band with new ideas far from what we used to play before. Whenever we were recording the intial demos for the EP, we decided that Bárbara and Sebastián should sing.

Q: Who are your influences?
We all have different influences, but agree in liking styles like post-rock and shoegaze. We don't limit our compositions to those specific styles, but clearly take some ideas from them.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We still have to get used to the feeling, we just played once as a band. It was fun and sounded alright. We have a lot of ideas to impprove our live show so we're excited to keep on doing it.

Q. How do you describe Velódromo sounds?
We'd say that our sound is reminiscent of 90's noise and shoegaze, but including some fresh synthetic textures. Since we take references from different musical styles, we believe we are creating something that is far from being conventional or easily associated to some band we've heard before.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We came with 4 songs to the studio, and just kept 2 of the original. The other 2 songs were practically created when we recorded the demos. We have a very good relation with our productor, who constantly gave his opinions and concrete contributions to our songs. The 4 songs ended sounding way different to what we thinked they would in the beggining, but they kept the essence of our initial ideas.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Here in Chile there's a lot of new bands with interesting sounds. We'd love to play with bands like Trementina and Adelaida, which are getting really big here, where we believe there's a noise scene in formation. Other chilean indie bands like Niños del Cerro and Patio Solar have, in our opinion, amazing new material with a lot of future.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?.
A Place to Bury Strangers.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Keep the media campaign in order to spread the word about our ep, start composing our first LP, and improve our live show.

We'd love to visit Brazil!

Q. When did The Marble Jackson started, tell us about the history...
500 years ago, in a far off land, The Marbles Jackson started… no, not really. We are around since late 2011. We’ve released two EPs and now releasing our debut album, “Notes To The Dust”. We are ready now. We don’t have play 9th on the bill at a jazz funk night. That’s how they do in a capital now, you know.

It’s a mixture of fear, exhalation and pure relief when it’s done without problems.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
We usually record the core instruments (drums, bass, guitar and key) live and build it from there by adding additional instruments and vocals. The vocals are usually recorded in the home studio.

De Brisbane, Austrália vem encharcado de pós punk lírico, cold wave cinzenta e shoegazer denso o Nite Fields.

Depersonalisation é o novo trabalho da banda, e caminha sempre melancolicamente imerso a guitarras sonhadoras e climas sempre cinzentos, por alguns momentos até que a luz chega um pouco mais próximo mas fica somente na esperança, porque ele nunca chega.

Me and Chris started sharing ideas in 2010 but we didn't start writing together properly until I moved to Brisbane from Melbourne in 2011.

I can't narrow it down that easily. Everything I hear/see/do in life can have an influence on our music not just 'XY band' and definitely not the XX band.

Carnival of Light with The Death of Pop - An Interview

Os londrinos do The Death of Pop soltaram Two Thousand and Thirteen no primeiro dia do ano passado e o disco é infestado, veja bem, infestado daquela sonoridade clássica da Creation no início dos 90´s, mas pega o lado mais jangle bubblegum das clássicas bandas do selo, tipo Boo Radleys no Wak Up Boo! ou o Ride no Carnival of Light.

Two Thousand and Thirteen é apaixonante, pitadas de psicodelismo, e doses de elegância moderna shoegazer, nunces de contemporâneos como Radio Dept são notadas também, o que apenas enrique ainda mais o trabalho.

Para sair cantarolando e dançando em qualquer lugar. Uma delicia.

Q. When did The Death of Pop started, tell us about the history
We started at the end of 2012 after a drunken conversation about disliking lots of music and our own situations. We decided we should start actually making music together that was serious. In the past we had recorded songs but they were usually joke songs We started recording songs over Christmas of that year and released our first two songs on 2nd January 2013. Q: Who are your influences?

We all listen to lots of different stuff, just to name a few, Teenage Fanclub, Guided by Voices, Pavement The Brian Jonestown Massacre, XTC, The Divine Comedy, The Monochrome Set, Split Enz, King Crimson, Ride, The Cure, early Blur, REM (IRS era), on the way to gigs we like to listen to Gong and Frank Zappa, good way to get us in the mood for playing live. Lush were a huge influence on our sound, particularly the early EP’s put together on the Gala album, me and Ollie always listened to lots of stuff with vocal harmonies in, The Beach Boys, The Association, Crosby Stills and Nash The Byrds, Elliott smith and Emitt Rhodes ALWAYS Emitt Rhodes.

We really couldn’t list a top 5, so we extended it to a top 10 at the moment.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
I’ve never personally been really into playing live but we have played some really enjoyable shows as The Death of Pop. People always tell us there is a big difference in our live sound to our recorded songs. I think we’re a lot heavier and louder live, it's a challenge to capture that attack and "energy" on record because we record in our flats.

Q. How do you describe The Death of Pop sounds?
Jangle-Gaze is how it was once describes and I think that covers it. We’re shoegazey with pop sensibilities, that is how people usually describe us. Ride and the creation sound are the usual comparisons.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We often demo the song first and then take it to Isaac (Bass) and Thom (drums) for some arrangement ideas. We usually get attached to the spontaneity demos so the songs don’t change too much, it’s usually almost a case of rerecording the demos to make them sound nicer and a bit more hi-fi. There is something instant about recording a song in 30 minutes, songs that take days to record lose their freshness.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Our friends YOOFS are doing some great stuff this year, check out ‘Another Boring Day’ and Husband Material (Bos Angeles new project) King TV and their singer Lou E are doing some great stuff, check out his song ‘Just One Thing’ Also Chorus Girl and Fake Laugh are making some super fun sounds.

QWhich band would you love to made a cover version of?
A remake of Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
CD compilation ‘Runts’ out with Spanish Label Disco De Kirlian out in April. Followed by EP in May, european tour in July and 7inch in October.

Telephatic Love with Heaven - An Interview

A melhor descrição para o quarteto de NY Heaven é dada por eles mesmos, algo como a trilha sonora para os filmes de John Hughes mas se os filmes fossem revisitados para os nossos dias.

Na verdade os caras começaram tudo como músicos do Bolts of Melody, projeto de Adam Franklin do Swervedriver, tocaram também com Dean & Britta e daí resolveram fundar sua própria banda.

Telephatic Love é o debute, lançado em 2013, um pérola no submundo dos bons sons, dreampop oitentista com nuances de shoegazer para fazer os sonhos decolarem em espaços e lugares distantes.

Os caras já avisam que vem material novo pela frente, resta a nós torcer pra vir rapidamente.

***** Interview with Heaven *****

Q. When did Heaven started, tell us about the history
Heaven started in 2010 when Mikey Jones, our drummer and co-writer, and I met playing with Adam Franklin from Swervedriver's solo project Bolts of Melody. We both supported Adam and other artists for years, so we decided to start our own band.

Q: Who are your influences?
Well, MIkey and I both brought different influences to the table to make Heaven what it is. The biggest influence on what I wanted the band to sound like was all the music out of England in the 1990s, all the Creation Records bands, MBV, Slowdive, Spiritualized, Jesus and Mary Chain, the Verve, Galaxie 500, stuff like that. Mikey comes from a more 1980s perspective with bands like Joy Division, the Cure, and Love and Rockets.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Hmm this is tough. it changes from day to day. I'll list the ones that first come to mind:

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We love to play live! Its a great feeling to play your songs for people and have them respond. It can be a nervous thing to do sometimes, but you get over that. for the most part its what we live for.

Q. How do you describe Heaven sounds?
I hate to describe my own music, it is very hard to do! But it is necessary. So lets just say its love song dream pop shoegaze new wave drone rock music stuff.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Well, we usually plan out our arrangements before hand, so when we go into the studio we can knock out the first bit of recording quickly. We first lay the drums and bass guitar down to give the songs a skeleton. Then come the synths and guitars next. After that is a lot of work with overdubs, getting different and unique guitar tones and keyboard sounds, and then the vocals, and then mixing... pretty standard!!

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Here are some of our friends' bands we play with in the US that are great: Nightmare Air, Dead Leaf Echo, Desert Stars, Caveman, Midnight Plus One, Baby Acid, Broncho, Tennis System.....

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
We already recorded a version of one of our favorite covers, Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order. its available on Itunes, check it out!

We have a new LP recorded and are hoping to have it out real soon. Keep the look out!!

Drugs To The Dear Youth with Ministry of Flowers - An Interview

Formada no auge do verão de 2012 em Moscou, o Ministry of Flowers muito bem poderia ter surgido na Califórnia em outro verão, talvez o de 1966, porque simplesmente a garageira psicodélica dos caras é o cartão de visitas.

Seu debute, House of Yesterday lançado em abril do ano passado é uma odisseia de fuzz, hammonds, riffs pegajosos, flores, ácidos e lisérgico até a medula.

Ecoam fantasmas de Standells, Chocolate Watchband e afins durante a audição do disco e o sabor amargo do lsd mais chapante do que nunca.

***** Interview with Ministry of Flowers *****

Q. When did Ministry of Flowers started, tell us about the history...
Ivan Kosarev: We started making music together in the summer of 2012 under the name The Lazybones and changed lately to Ministry Of Flowers. We started out as garage rock band and we gradually change our music towards more psychedelic sound. All songs are made by me, a.k.a. our guitarist/vocalist Ivan Kosarev, with other guys helping with magic and rhythm. Right now the band consists of three guys: Dan Fuchs on bass, Kostya Raydugin on drums and Ivan Kosarev on guitar/vox.

Q: Who are your influences?
Ivan Kosarev: Well, we are a very strange band with drummer being in love with mathrock and things like that, bass player being a fan of Grateful Dead, jazz and ethnic music and me being mad about 60s psychedelic rock, sitar, Arabian and Indian music. But when we’ve just started we wanted to sound like The Sonics, The Velvet Underground, early Pink Floyd and maybe some Jimi Hendrixy stuff.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Ivan Kosarev: Well, I’m a music addict. I can only name you a few albums of my current playlist:

It may change tomorrow Actually, what I love the most in music is the ability to create mood and to let you travel among your dreams … or somewhere else far from reality.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Ivan Kosarev: It’s like being a magical music crystal being charged with cheers and dances. I feel absolutely great about it.

Q. How do you describe Ministry of Flowers sounds?
Ivan Kosarev: Sounds? It’s like living in a fairytale with a chainsaw. Or being a giant crocodile and trying to climb on a skyscraper. Or living in a dark forest with the nation of mushroom men. Or floating in open space and with spiky stars and rubber asteroids. For me each song of the Ministry is a different surreal painting.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
Ivan Kosarev: It’s so much fun. We like to do crazy and funny stuff along with experiments during recording. Our last album was recorded in Moscow at Magnetone Studios using only antique analog tape recorders and other equipment twice older than I am. And I’m 23. Now we’re planning to do the next step and record our new album completely by ourselves.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Ivan Kosarev: I’m in love with Australian guys like Tame Impala, Pond along with Temples and Black Angels. Well…I’m surely forgetting someone…

Q: Which band would you love to make a cover version of?
Ivan Kosarev: Hmm, We don’t like playing covers too much but it could be nearly everything. Maybe we’ll cover some songs of the bands from the last question.

Q: What´s the plans for future...
Ivan Kosarev: Play, record … We’d love to hit the euro tour to let more people know about our music.

Uma verdadeira preciosidade chamada The Quivers que ficou em um hiato durante um ano volta as atividades e em celebração a isso o TBTCI armou mais uma daquelas entrevistas que certamente vai virar predileta, pelo menos por aqui.

O The Quivers em 2013 soltou um single simplesmente sublime, "Let it Rain" é o nome da pérola, algo como a sequência psicodélica se os Telescopes não enveredassem por outros caminhos.

Q. When did The Quivers started, tell us about the history...
1: The Quivers started about 5 years ago, we were all in bands that were crumbling, wanted to do solo stuff that was similar to one anothers ideas, so made sense to join and work together… Then Mark our drummer joined.

Q: Who are your influences?
2: Influences include, but not limited to; Telescopes and Ride, with a smattering of MBV and the Stone Roses.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
4: playing live is fairly intoxicating, or maybe its because we’re intoxicated haha. Playing live just has that element of fragility, quite often the unexpected happens with a song or an audience member getting a bit too in your face haha.

Q. How do you describe The Quivers sounds?
5: Loud, we’d describe our sound as loud, but really you’ll have to listen yourselves to make your own judgement.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
6: Process of recording… we’re predominantly a live band, and record live. Sounds the best, we don’t really dig the rigidity and separation of recording parts separately. Its and organic (yeah term) process revolving around Melbourne tinnies on a weekend.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
7: Recommend Sunbeam Sound Machine, a fella out of Melbourne who’s pretty ace. Lowtide, who released an album last year which is fantastic, slow burning delight. We’ve played with them before. Lovely people mostly. Also the Answering Belles, Lefty and Kodiak Galaxy are another couple of bands we thoroughly enjoy.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
8: Probably a cover version of Celeste by Telescopes, really cool song. And the film clip is something we hope to emulate (or rip, whatever haha) one day.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
9: We’ve been on hiatus for about a year, and are just starting to get back into it together, this interview came at the perfect time really. We intend on recording a couple of tunes properly and sending them out. See what happens, play a show or two, nothing concrete at this time.

Dig For Fire with Dreambook - An Interview

O quarteto estadunidense Dreambook é algo como uma colisão entre Pixies e Cure, ou Dinosaur Jr e Ride, uma verdadeira explosão de pós punk, noise e shoegazer.

Tudo devidamente explicitado principalmente em sua estreia, o maravilhoso Only Ghost, álbum de 2013 e seu mais recente trabalho, o ep Burn The Light Out, lançado neste mês.

Trabalhos que devem ser apreciados pelos iniciados e propagados o máximo possível, porque o Dreambook é daquelas jóias raras escondidas no submundo dos bons sons.

1. When did dreambook start? Tell us the history.
RW: Dreambook was not really supposed to be a band. Jim Anderson starting writing side project songs in 2011. Simultaneous to this, Jim had also built a guitar for me (Rachel Wetzel) that I was teaching myself to play. I wanted to make loud noise in Jim’s practice space, so we started going there and I was noodling around and writing lead lines to go over Jim’s songs. We started to record them in Garage Band but were unhappy with the stock drum beats in the program. A friend of ours, Joe Grogan, said he’d come in and play the drums in our recordings. Brian Ziprin was beginning his recording career and he showed up to record the three of us, but he also brought his bass. It was a band from there on. We recorded our first LP and just when it was released, Joe took a job in Seattle. We had a friend fill in for a while until we added our current drummer Jeremy Gewertz in 2013. Shortly after that, we had a falling out with Brian and he left the band. I was having health issues at the time, so the band was on a little bit of a hiatus. Last fall, we met Ray Keenan shortly after he moved to Philly and he has been our bass player ever since. With the current (and I think best) line up, we’ve been able to pick up where we left off last year but with even more momentum.

2. Who are your influences?
RW: Being a shoegaze inspired band, the 90s shoegaze bands like MBV, Ride, etc. are obvious influences but we draw from a lot of other sounds that might not be obvious right away like Sonic Youth, Boards of Canada, early era Cure and the general heavy bass sounds of bands produced by Butch Vig.

3. Make a list of 5 albums of all time.
RW: This was hard for us since we are all music nerds so we each picked one LP we like front to back and one we all agreed upon.

4. How do you feel playing live?
ALL: Never completely comfortable. Though you may not pick up on that from seeing us live.

5. How do you describe your sound?
ALL: Dark sounding ambient rock, with a heavy shoegaze slant.

6. Tell us the process of recording songs.
RW: Our first LP, Only Shadows, took forever and a day to record and mix because we were doing it ourselves and not on someone else’s time frame and our dime. Recently, we recorded a four song EP with our friend Dan Morse that we recorded in a weekend and mixed for a few weeks after that. The process was super laid back and Dan was very efficient. He also has an incredible ear for sound, took extensive notes about our comments and managed to give us everything we asked for in the edits- even if he thought it was crazy at first.

7. Which new bands do you recommend?
RK: Torture Love out of Chicago

ALL: True Widow

RW: Speedy Ortiz, Savages, the newest Thurston Moore solo record, Ex Hex, Creepoid

8. Which band would you love to cover?
RW: Since we all love Dinosaur Jr, we once covered Let It Ride. I’d say we are more about playing our own songs though, but Jeremy has expressed an interest in covering Bauhaus in our style. I brought up the possibility of covering the Wedding Present Octopussy some time ago but no one bought into it.

9. What’s the plan for the future?
RW: We just finished our EP, which will be released on cassette tape mid-April in a super limited edition of 25 at our show opening for Rainer Maria and then a run of 100 that will be released shortly after. You can stream it on our bandcamp page now along with our last LP (dreambook.bandcamp.com). We also have new songs written and are working on a few more that we will hopefully record this summer. We would like to put out another full length in early 2016.

Leave the planet started at the beginning of 2014 when I moved into jack’s flat. we shared love for the same bands so started a project.

We can suggest some of our favourite underground bands we are currently listening to such as Fine Before You Came, His Electro Blue Voice, Brothers In Law, Wildhoney and Vaadat Charigim There are lots of bands making great music out there we had to choose the ones that came to us first.

Maybe we would love to do a cover of a Post Rock band in our own style..

Dreams Burn Down with Tuques - An Interview

No final do ano passado chegou em minhas mãos, Slushpuppie, a brilhante estreia do quarteto canadense Tuques.

Foi amor a primeira audição, não teve por onde eu fugir. Sonhos transportados para música em formato de muralhas de distorções cintilantes, sem desbandar para a barulheira extrema, e também sem cair para o lado etéreo, o Tuques soube equacionar o shoegazer e pegar o que há de melhor e envolver por completo este que vos escreve.

Q. When did tuques started, tell us about the history...
Tuques started with myself on vocals/guitar, Dan Cook on guitar/vocals, Robert Michalec on bass and Andrew Rachinski on drums. Andrew moved to Toronto and now Dan is moving to Montreal so tuques continuation became a bit uncertain. For a while we were going to do some shows with Sal Duncan on drums but that didn’t end up working out. So in all this messiness and people moving away we decided to make tuques a kind of ‘open relationship’ band haha…which just basically means that we want to play shows with different people and try different things! So right now our live semi-stable line–up is myself on vocals/guitar, Stacy Burnett on guitar/vocals, Alana Taylor on bass/vocals and Durell Smith on drums and well just see how things go from there.

Q: Who are your influences?
Forming, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Yuck, Bjork, Cousins, Big Brave, Sleater Kinney, Maica Mia, Des Ark, Hop Along, Screaming Females to name a few

I can only speak for myself personally, and this question seems way too hard so I’ll just do the 5 albums/artist I’m listening to right now.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
I think I get less and less nervous every time we play which makes it more and more fun. I think it’s very important to make sure that everyone at a show feels safe and good! Everyone in tuques is pretty sassy so I’m excited about that [we haven’t played with the new line–up yet]

Q. How do you describes Tuques sounds?
Dreamy, sleepy, poppy, dancy, sad-y

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
First we tried recording alone, stay with me, and rosie with Dan, myself, Robert and Andrew but they didn’t turn out the way we wanted, then Andrew moved away. I think there was a point where were just going to give up but somehow we wrote three more songs and then recorded the six with Sal Duncan [who did an amazing job and is such a sweetie]. Andrew had moved by this point so I ended up recording all the drums on the record, which was fun and weird. Dan wrote some of his guitar parts the day we recorded haha It was pretty all over the place but I think it turned out pretty well.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Dorothea Paas, Hag Face, TEETH, Evan A. James, K E E R A K, OK Jazz, Banshee, Daydreaming, Stepmothers, Borscht, Hood Joplin, TIGERWING, Tee Tahs [there is probably a million more that i’m missing because I suck]

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
We’re planning on covering Dreams by The Cranberries, we did a cover of Nirvana’s Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle and Cousins’ Thunder.

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
We have a few shows in Calgary and Edmonton coming up and other than that, just writing and hanging. I’ll be gone for a lot of the summer and Durell and Alana are going to be touring the west coast with there other band Daydreaming.

Q. When did Bathernay started, tell us about the history...
A: Bathernay started in september 2012. It began as a solo project of the leader, Nicolas. After to post an advertising on the web, Nicolas was rejoined by 3 musicians. The actual line up is composed with Eric (Guitar), Oli (bass) and Guilhem (drums).

They play together since augustus 2014.

Q: Who are your influences?
A: Our influences are God Machine, Beach house, Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Deerhunter, Slowdive, A Place to Bury Strangers, Joy Division, Blonde Redhead, My Bloody Valentine,...and so on...

A: It's a classic boy-meets-girl-meets-boy-starts-a-band.

The Passion of Lovers with In Letter Form - An Interview

De São Francisco vem o quarteto In Letter Form, pós punk, darkwave e todas as vertentes derivadas dos áureos tempos sombrios e gélidos da virada do 70´s para os 80´s estão inseridos na sonoridade dos caras.

Explorations of Unknown Destinations, o álbum de estreia lançado em 2014 é um exercício contínuo de revitalização dos ícones daquela era transformados e atualizados para os nossos dias.

Sombrio, denso e por vezes amargurado, o In Letter Form em sua estreia definitivamente criou um álbum que poderia facilmente ter sido lançado naquela época sem soar datado.

Acabaram de soltar um novo single Reflecting the Rain que mantém o que começaram no debute.

Para a alegria dos goths de plantão, o In Letter Form vai além da mesmice de seus contemporâneos.

***** Interview with In Letter Form *****

Q. When did In Letter Form start? tell us about the history...
In Letter Form began in San Francisco as a nameless project of Eric's, back in 2010. He wrote a collection of songs that included These Days Go By, Again and AM Regret which were modest and shy first attempts at finding his voice, he had never been behind a microphone or at least, not with any thoughts of calling himself a "singer." The solo work he did was a collection of letters to people he loved or lost. The time eventually came when he went searching for collaborators who shared not only a similar musical aesthetic and influence but more importantly, the conviction and courage to create art that is vulnerable and honest.

Eric Miranda, James Levis and Peter Dosanjh came together in 2012 and named the project In Letter Form during their first meeting. The name was fitting for the manner in which Eric wrote those first few tracks and also conjured imagery of an antiquated form of communication. Often playing instruments (not playback devices) and doing all of the things necessary to create and stay active, can often feel a lot like engaging in a past time, like sitting down to type a letter. The name is to be taken literally and metahorically.

Q: Who are your influences?
We love and are influenced by so many artists, musicians, authors, painters, film makers, poets. Musically, we love post punk, new wave, and many staples of the late 70's/80's, so Joy Division, New Order, The (early) Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Chameleons, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, The Church, The Smiths, The Cramps, Pulp, Modern Lovers, The Velvet Underground

Never! You ask the Impossible. But I will give you a sample. (This is from Eric since Im the one up at 2:44 am writing this):

Q. How do you feel playing live?
All of us love and look forward to l playing live. I tend to go into a trance like state. It always starts the same, nervousness, anxiety, fear of rejection, flushed cheeks, randomly check-listing of dos and don'ts, reaffirmation of conviction to be playing. Much of what I do (technically) is a function of muscle memory which allows me to lose myself in the emotion of the sound and story telling. However, some of the best moments is when it all feels like its happening for the first time, musical phrasing is written on the spot and I feel completely immersed and omni present in the moment and with the sound. Thats the goal. Everyone of our songs tells a story and at the heart of those stories is usually immense beauty found in llove or loss, or sadness and joy. Its important that I do my best to faithfully deliver the sentiment accurately and honestly just as you would feel obligated to hit the correct notes of a given song.

Q. How do you describe In Letter Form sounds?
Familiar yet new. Haunting and immediate, temporal and melodic.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Its a process we're always striving to improve upon. James is our sound engineer and a damn talented man. We record and mix all of our own music. Sometimes this is a blessing and other times a curse. Theres a part of me that would like to find someone who is not so close to the songs, who could look at the work from their unique perspective and push it further into an all together piece of art.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
New bands? Black Marble, Cold Showers, Viet Cong, Editors, Geographer, The Trims, A Place to Bury Strangers, Tremor Low, XX.

Q: What´s the plans for the future....
We are starting regional routings (mini tours) we have plans for our first 7" A/B "Wait Now" and "Reflecting the Rain" both of which also are being released with a video component March 31st and April 14th, respectively. We're opening for Peter Murphy, so we're all very excited for that. Beyond that, we intend to keep writing music that is meaningful to us and that we believe in, and be able to share it with those we love and have yet to meet.

***** Interview with Lost Secrets *****

Q. When did Lost Secrets started, tell us about the history...
The main idea arised one Xmas afternoon in my appartment on 2010, I (Vicent Martin) was talking on the phone with my friend Henry Galán, we were discussing about a pedal effect (EHX DELUXE MEMORY MAN) I was explaining him the coolest thing about this pedal it was to use it in a Shoegaze band. I have been many years playing in some independent alternative rock bands (drums mainly and bass) and Henry was working for almost twenty years in their solo project based in minimal music, so we both were to far each other in the musical spectrum. And talking about with him about Shoegaze bands I said: “Hey, the coolest thing of it all would be to form a Shoegaze band!!” So that idea was the beginning of our project. We started to rehearse with some own songs I have, Henry playing keyboards space strings and bassline, another guy (that left the band then) playing drums and me playing guitar with a lot pedal effects (three MEMORY MAN pedals included of course!).

Q: Who are your influences?
We are music lovers, so we listen all kind of music, really all, but obviously we have our own preferences, the band is moving between a “natural sound balance” between order and chaos. Our influences are very different, from minimal music Kings: Philip Glass, Klaus Schulze, Mike Olfield with their strict order and perfect sound to the epic guitar sounds of Smashing Pumpkins, MBV, TJAMC and our songs have melo/sad mood based and very influenced by The Cure and Joy Division. Now we are moving towards more electronic sounds, so we admit The XX has been an important influence for us in the last year.

May this be the hardest question of all (LOL), …, But let’s say these albums are the vital signs in music in Lost Secrets’s sound.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Our main work is based in weekly rehearsals since our beginning, so it is playing live when we feel more confortable. When we feel that we connect with people who came at our concerts, when we see a girl that is moving their head with our rhythm or we realize that someone is singing our lyrics, we know our work is well done. Until now it is playing live when we feel our sound is closer to our reality. So try to make concerts as much as we could, in a electric way mainly or even acoustic if the local needed. We love play live that’s it!

Q. How do you describe Lost Secrets sounds?
Our main idea is located in Shoegaze sound, big drum sound, bigger delayed, reverbered and distorted guitar sound, with space strings as background and all of this leaded by a dark and deep voice, this was our mantra until now. But recently we are more synthesized sounds oriented, we are working based on electronic drums tracks and some arpeggiated sounds, we have now some new demos more electrical but even more dreamy than our previous songs. “Return” (demo) at our bandcamp it will be a very good example of our present sound. http://lostsecrets.bandcamp.com/track/return

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
For the recording of our first EP called Beautiful Noize, we recorded at a professional studio located in Madrid, we spend about 3-4 months to record all tracks, and two more months for the mastering and mixing, yes a lot of time for an EP (we are Spanish alter all!), we uses to make jokes with this recording comparing it with the Tears For Fears’ Seeds of Love album recording…, Five of the seven tracks were recorded in this studio, but the intro and the outtro were recorded in my home studio. For the new Ep, we have decided to combine songs recorded at a professional studio and songs recorded in our own home studio, as the new songs are based in a electronic drum and synthesized loop, with many tracks of guitars overdubbed. We are very excited about the new songs recording!

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Before we will mention all shoegaze new bands, we want to mention two Spanish bands that we love, one it is called Havalina, if we want to sound like a band we want to sound like Havalina, incredible live sound and records as well… yes, we think they are the biggest Spanish Rock Band ever..! and another Spanish band called: Nueva Internacional, it sounds very very classic Shoegaze. Q: What´s the plans for future.... Now we are working in new demos, and probably we will plan to record the new songs after summer. Henry is building a beautiful home studio in his attic, so as commented below we will record songs (electronic oriented) by ourselves and then the songs with real drums will be recorded in an professional studio. We have been invited to play in a local Music Festival (no, its not the FIB) this summer arround July, and recently it will appear in the web an acoustic concert that we made some weeks ago for a musical Management website. We have planned also to upload a live concert in our bandcamp account for free. After the good experience of playing our songs in acoustic format, we are thinking to record some songs of our Beautiful Noize EP in acoustic. Apart from that, we will remain with our weekly rehearsals.

Q. When did Free Sunshine Acid started, tell us about the history...
We started jamming 6 years ago and over time gathered more members and the passion grew. From our grand parents living rooms to garages to rehearsal studios, even in the back of a van on a beach... we've always played music with passion and so recorded our EP and countless soundcloud tracks.

Q: Who are your influences?
Some of our favourite bands who influence our music would be Black Rebel Motorcycle club, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, My Bloody Valentine, Spiritualized, Spacemen 3 and The Velvet Underground.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Playing live is an amazing feeling, it's easy to lose yourself in the music and forget your playing to a crowd, especially when you have trippy projection playing behind you.

Q. How do you describe Free Sunshine Acid sounds?
Our sound is inconsistant, it can be drone, psychadelic or more bluesy. Depends on our mood when it's been recorded

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We sometimes record songs individually or together... which gives our music more diversity.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Don't know of any new bands to recommend but some lesser well known bands that should be known are Magic Shoppe, House of Dolls and The Green Tambourine Band

Q: Which band would you love to make a cover version of
We never feel fulfilled covering songs, playing someone else's work isn't as enjoyable as creating something spontaneous which is conceived from the moment and can't be predicted by anyone in the band... It makes music more beautiful and interesting

Q: What´s the plans for future....
We plan on creating music till we die or go deaf, we want to record more and play more gigs, just like any band out there.

Hellbound with Monster Treasure - An Interview

Q. When did Monster Treasure started, tell us about the history...
A: We started playing music in 2011 when we lived together in Stockton, California. We’ve been friends and playing music together since 2003. One night we were listening to “Big Baby” by Shadowy Men On a Shadowy Planet in Briana’s car. After that, we decided we wanted to be called Monster Treasure.

We started playing and writing songs in the living room and recorded our EP in 2012 and released it on tapes with Squirmy and Phono Select Records. After that, we recorded a few song demos and released a split tape with Babysitter through Shake! Records in Canada. Last August we released our LP with Harlot Records on Vinyl. We continue to play shows in California and are currently writing new songs.

Q: Who are your influences? Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
A: Major influences: Yo La Tengo, The Breeders, Huskur du, Jawbreaker…

Q. How do you feel playing live?
A: We’re always a little nervous or excited before we play but usually, depending on the crowd or alcohol intake, after that, it’s usually balls to the wall.

Q. How do you describe Monster Treasure sounds?
A: Chainsaws and Mermaids.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
A: We recorded our LP with our good friend Ben “Rock” Hirschfield at Nu-Tone Studios in Pittsburg, California. We recorded 13 songs in about 4 days during November 2014 and celebrated Thanksgivukkah (Thanksgiving + Hanukah).

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
A: Babysitter, Hag Face, Tough Age (all from Canada). Buddy Banter, Yogurt Brain, Puzzled (California) and Landlines (Portland, Oregon).

Q: What´s the plans for future....
We’re playing a few shows in Southern California in April. Possibly playing in Vancouver, BC in July. We’re also writing new songs.

Seventeen Seconds with Stillwave - An Interview

De Utrecht, Paises Baixos, vem o sombrio e instigante Stillwave.

Seu debute homônimo transita pelos caminhos densos do pós punk com doses de modernidades referencias diretas a Radiohead e Interpol.

O que se ouve é uma cozinha poderosa, vocais angustiantes, criando uma atmosfera intensa e poderosa.

Grande álbum de pós punk feito 3 décadas depois do auge do movimento, genial.

Q. When did Stillwave started, tell us about the history...
Stillwave started around 2011 when Marcel (singer/bass) and Michaël (guitar) decided to ask Adriaan (drummer) if he maybe would like to jam for a bit. We immediately clicked musically. One year later we decided to start playing live and call ourselves Stillwave. Add three years to that and we’re still figuring out what that word means. It sometimes feels like Stillwave hasn’t even started yet, in a very good way though. Our being together has expanded into something that is not just musical, but also brotherly. We work on Stillwave every day together and we have fun.

Q: Who are your influences?
We never really picked our influences beforehand, we just started making music together and the Stillwave sound eventually started coming out. We see it like this: pretty much everything you listen to influences you in a certain way, even if it is in a negative manner (because you figure out what you do not like). So there isn’t a fixed sort of sound we aspire to. What we do is simply a consequence of all the music we listen to in our lives.

We have some individual influences though, sure. Michaël loves slow noisy things like Slowdive and Mogwai, but also hyperactive insane electronic music like Flying Lotus and Aphex Twin. Marcel loves slightly more pop-oriented music as Wolf Alice and Chvrches. Adriaan listens to Kanye West and dust covered records that belong to his ex-girlfriend’s grandfather (Fleetwood Mack!). We all love Radiohead.

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
- Michaël: Stars of the Lid – And Their Refinement of the Decline - All: Radiohead – Amnesiac - Adriaan: Talking Heads – Stop Making Sense (not technically a studio album but I don’t know of any studio album that tops this concert)

- Marcel: Muse - Absolution - Michaël: Mogwai – Come on Die Young

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Michaël: Angry, all riled up and alive. Marcel: At the best moments serene, confident and connected with everyone I can see. At these moments I truly am finally at ease. Adriaan: I feel like I am where I’m supposed to be. Also somewhat aggressive at times.

Q. How do you describe Stillwave sounds?
Michaël: Q Music recently refered to Tarmac Plains as a fever dream. like that a lot, although I would like to add that it would be a good fever dream, one where you know the fever is going to kill all the bad things going on in your body or something. There’s something comforting in there. I once had one of these fevers in the middle of the night after having been ill for several days. There was a huge thunderstorm a few miles away and it was raining softly. I went out and watched the storm whilst shivering like a puppy. It just felt fucking great. That’s how Stillwave should sound to me.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Usually someone comes with a small idea such as a sound or chord progression and we just start working on that. Sometimes we throw everything away after working on it for a month, sometimes it works immediately and we don’t change anything and use it just like that. It’s always a collective effort. When we record these songs we try to listen if it works and if it doesn’t, we add something to it to make it work anyway. Recording is always part of the writing process.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
From our hometown of Utrecht: Aestrid, Bodypolitics and Woods on Fire. New might be a bit of a stretch, though. But in Brasil they’re probably quite unknown. These are great bands, do yourselves a favour and check them out.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Michaël: We don’t do covers usually, but I would love to play a noisy and explosive version of a Johnny Cash song. He was intense.

Marcel: Would love for us to do a Cloud Nothings cover where Adriaan and Michaël are singing lead.

Adriaan: How about The Well and the Lighthouse by Arcade Fire? Marcel’s idea sounds cool too, tho!

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Record the best album we possibly can as soon as we can and then tour across the entire world, including Brasil hopefully
