The Tape Of You with Sulk - An Interview

***** Interview with Sulk *****

Q. When did Sulk start? Tell us about the history...
Tomas (lead guitar and songwriter) and I (Jon) met at a Tamborines show a few years back. He had seen Andy and me play in a different band and asked us if we were interested in listening to some tunes he had written and if we would be up for getting involved. We had all the same influences so it was kind of exciting, I had no idea that what we were gonna hear would be so mind blowing. I am and always will be the biggest SULK fan!

Q: Who are your influences?
I think people have always found it easy to pigeonhole SULK as we are proud of wearing our hearts on our sleeve, especially when it comes to our debut record. As a band we are heavily into both film and music and have never been ones to follow a trend. There’s a few words out in music for the last few years which we feel are heavily abused in meaning and try and steer clear of being thrown on the bandwagon. Our new record is certainly still SULK in sound but we have journeyed further into our record collections and progressed to a higher plain.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Love - Forever Changes
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Associates - Sulk
David Bowie - Lodger
KLF - White Room

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Live is my favourite part of being in a band. It's a release of all the work you have put into the songs and the true representation of what the band is. We are lucky as the fans seem to get us and I’m blessed to have four great musicians to share a stage with.

Q. How do you describe Sulk sounds?
As I mentioned earlier we have always been proud to wear our influences on our sleeves. Here in the UK we have a rich heritage of truly great bands and it’s a linearage we want to continue. Melody and classic choruses is something everyone should feel is important. We are not scared of the word pop and that is the root from where all the other branches of our sound comes from.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Tomas comes up with the inital idea then presents it to us. If we like it we take it to rehearsal and it becomes a SULK song.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
It’s a funny one. We personally don’t go to many gigs as we are so busy trying to get SULK in the best postion. 'Eagulls' really struck a chord with me when late one night my mate brought the record round and we just sat until the early hours listening to it on repeat. I’m hearing whispers there new record is going to be mega too. The only other band are quite little known at the moment but very very special as they are so sincere and original. They are originally from Spain and are called 'Ghost Car'. They are very 'Shop Assisants', 'Talulah Gosh'!

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Definitely Julian Cope ‘Head hung low’. Great meaning and I know exactly how it would sound with us playing it. Outstanding.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
I like the title of the Joe Strummer film ‘The Future is Unwritten’, it certainly describes this business as being so unpredictable. We want to be huge and have no wish to stay a tiny indie band. However the only thing I can be sure of at this moment is anything we release will be the great!

Q: Any parting words?
Enjoy the new record x
