Vail with Decorum - An Interview

***** Interview with Decorum *****

Q. When did Decorum get started, tell us about the history...
Sable: Leif and I started playing together, writing skeletons of songs with basses about a year ago. We were both pretty into the idea of creating something moody and weird but still melodic and catchy, kind of. We found Shay through Craigslist and it just clicked together.

Q: Who are your influences?
Shay: My greatest influences are actually my favorite drummers: Christopher Guanlao, Stella Mozgawa, Matt Tong, Jack Bevan, Sam Fogarino and Simone Pace. All of them are fantastic creators who do just enough or everything possible to make their music brilliant.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Shay: 23 by Blonde Redhead,
LP1 by FKA Twigs,
Voices by Phantogram,
Turn On The Bright Lights by Interpol,
and Midnight Boom by The Kills.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Leif: I prefer playing live to recording. Nothing is predictable in a live setting. I also enjoy the experience of performing in a non-traditional venue (church, house, basement, attic) and still sounding pristine. Playing live is also my biggest downfall. If the sound is off, or something out of our control is making us perform poorly, I freeze and just take myself out of the moment.

Sable: I’m pretty susceptible to crowd vibes so sometimes I get nervous, so far.

Q. How do you describe the sound of Decorum?
Leif: Decorum sounds like an underwater language to me.

Sable: A horror film soundtrack

Shay: Darkness swimming in a pool of light that erupted into technical rhythms.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
Leif: We don’t have a lot of experience with recording in this band yet. So far it’s just been quick due to lack of funds and more of necessity rather than a choice. This last time around, we recorded with our good friend Scott Hallam at our practice space in Brooklyn. If you listen really close you can probably hear other bands practicing as we are recording. It took about five days over the course of two weeks to get everything recorded individually.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Leif: I like Final Bloom, Big Bliss, Tuff Turf, Haldol, Blank Spell, Lover’s Touch, Sneaks, Boyfriends, Nail Polish, Casual Hex, Pleather, Bat, Vats.

Sable: Our friends Operator Music Band are really cool. I like Wet too.

Shay: I recommend Logic. He's a young rapper who is beyond his years, just...lovely.

Q: Which song or band would you love to cover?
Leif: I Wish I Knew What Dress To Wear by Ginny Arnell.

Shay: I would love to cover Jimi Hendrix Experience. Jimi's drummer and bassist are insane and I think the whole vibes/energy between us (DECORUM) would be amazing.

Q: What are plans for the future?
Leif: I want to play shows in Europe and Japan.
