Aguas Frescas with Wildfires - An Interview

***** Interview with Wildfires *****

Q. When did Wildfires start? Tell us about the history...
We started about 4 years ago as a two-piece. We were guitar, a loop station, and drummer. We wrote a set full of songs and played a few shows, and promptly decided to make a whole band out of it. We tried out a few lead guitar players and it was awful. We kept getting crazy people, but then we found Johanna, and it was awesome. Then right after that we got Aneil to play bass.

We got our sound with a little trial and error, but once we found what we wrote naturally, we got really productive and excited about what we were doing.

Q: Who are your influences?
Our influences change all the time really. We started by wanting to sound like The War on Drugs, Real Estate, and Kurt Vile. But over time we started being influenced my more eclectic stuff, like MBV, Protomartyr, Deerhunter, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Viet Cong, Lower Dens, Can… the list goes on. We all listen to music religiously, so our influences will always be dynamic.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
My Bloody Valentine-Loveless
Deerhunter- Monomania
Can- Tago Mago
Yo La Tengo- I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One
Pavement-Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
Unwound- New Plastic Ideas

Oh, that’s six. Well, I could’ve kept going… It’s really too hard to choose five.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We love it. We play live a lot. If we go too long between shows, we start to get really antsy.

Q. How do you describe Wildfires sounds?
I think we are Dream Pop band with Post-Punk sensibilities. The mission was to create songs that made you feel the way you did when you first heard Shoegaze, or the feeling you get on an overnight drive when your favorite mix tape was playing. Nostalgic, shimmery, but new.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We knew the exact producer and studio we wanted to work with. We went to Erik Wofford at Cacophony Studios, famous for recording Bill Callahan, The Black Angels, Explosions in The Sky, among many other legendary artists. Erik was on-board to record, mix, and master the records. Logistically, we knew we would need to record the first record in one week. During that week, the concept of creating two stand-alone EPs, a “Part I” and “Part II” under the name of Aguas Frescas came to fruition. Aguas Frescas (Part I) was released in the spring of 2015. When going to the studio to complete the six song Aguas Frescas (Part II), the growth we experienced over that year was palatable, and produced a stronger, more ambitious follow-up.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
I love the first Viet Cong record. They just changed their name to Preoccupations, and I’m excited to hear their new record. I’m a HUGE fan of the British band Wild Beasts. I also love the new Parquet Courts.

I think folks should check out some fellow Austinites’ band Pale Dian. They’re killer. And our fellow Austinites’ “Spray Paint” and “A Giant Dog” are both kicking ass right now, too. Check em out.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
I would love to cover a Morrissey song, but I couldn’t do it justice.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
We are making a couple of videos, which is fun. We are about to release our album in August. We’ll plan to do a couple of very short tours at some point. But after that, we will probably make another record in 2017. We don’t really plan that far out.

Q: Any parting words?
(it’s an inside joke) Thanks, YOUR MAJESTY.
