Waxen Palm with VENN - An Interview

Escute no talo.

***** Interview with VENN *****

Q. When did VENN start? Tell us about the history...
Ben & Stuart met when they were playing in another band, the two other members of the band decided they wanted to go it alone and make a more electronic-leaning sound- so they formed Shiftwork together. And Ben & Stu wanted to continue playing together so they made a few recordings as VENN, and had a couple of people filling in on synth, eventually I was one of them and I stuck around...

Q: Who are your influences?
Of the bands influences I'd say Liars, Beak>, Wire, Deerhunter....I'd also say we are influenced a lot by electronic music- maybe not in such a direct manner- but in the sounds and the production, people like Levon Vincent, Nico Motte...

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
That's a weird one to try and answer on behalf of the band. If I was to give you a list of my favourite albums, I don't think they would give any indication of what our music is like! And I know it would be the same for the other two.

However, I think if you wanted to make a VENN cocktail you could probably blend up these recordings:

Join Inn by Ash Ra Tempel,
Love's Secret Domain by Coil,
Quadrant Dub by Basic House,
Swell Maps In "Jane From Occupied Europe" ,
and any Deerhunter from Cryptograms/Fluorescent Grey/Microcastle

and it would taste a little bit like us! (but a bit sweeter)

Q. How do you feel playing live?
How we feel playing live all comes down to how we feel in soundcheck. We have a fairly complicated live set up; so quite often, being the support band, if we only get 20 minutes to soundcheck (which happens more than I'd like!) then it shows when we play. That said, if we get a proper soundcheck, and the sound engineer is good then it feels great when we play!

Q. How do you describe VENN sounds?
Well, I can say the sounds we TRY and create- looped guitars, motorik drums, droning synths and found sounds- but sometimes when we're beginning the development of a song it's a lot of feedback, repetition and loud "WOO!"s....actually that's maybe a more accurate description of our sound...

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
The songs all came together in a patchwork sort of way. We put down the drums and bass for all the tracks in the studio, but a lot of other parts were added after that, some were recorded at home too. And a few of the songs were from old demo's, they had certain parts that we had trouble re-creating so we ended up just lifting them from the original recordings. I'm amazed it sounds so cohesive actually!

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
I really like Vactrol Park, and Happy Meals. And although they're not particularly new I love Preoccupations.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
We've talked a lot about doing a cover actually, we discussed maybe doing Pink Frost by The Chills, which I wish we'd done so we could've played it when we supported them! Although I'm not sure if they would've been too impressed with that... I'd also really like to cover Cue by Yellow Magic Orchestra

Q: What are your plans for the future?
Well, we have our album coming out in March (It's called Runes and it's on Full Time Hobby records- plug, plug!) so once that's available we just want to tour that and get people listening to it. After that, we'll just have to see.

Q: Any parting words?
Yes. Thank you for interviewing us, that was very nice of you.
